How often should vacuuming be done in the home? Is at least twice a week enough? What about every day?

Everyone has their own home cleaning habits, from what day they do it; to how long they do it for and what tools they use to do it. Some people may do it twice a week and others may do it every day.

In this article, we explore the benefits of regular cleaning and how certain households should do it more than others. We'll also recommend which Hoover vacuum cleaners can help you get the job done.

How often should you vacuum your home?

We believe how often you should vacuum your home depends on a few factors, here's a list of a few scenarios where vacuuming regularly can benefit the home;

How often the home gets dirty

Busy homes with plenty of people coming in and out through high traffic areas means more dirt can be brought in and settle on surfaces and floors. Carpets can hold on to dirt a bit more but hard floors can still get filthy just as easily.

Moreover, homes that are occupied by people who enjoy the great outdoors bringing in mud and pollen can get dirty quickly. On the opposite side of things, homes with fewer occupants who don't tend to go out often will stay cleaner for longer but they still need attention from room to room periodically.

The more people in the house, the dirtier a house can get - but also more people who could help with the cleaning making it into a shared family chore.

Homes with gardens can get dirty quickly as well as homes that have their windows open a lot - small particles of dirt, pollution and pollen can get in easily this way.

Busy homes, which are regularly exposed to dirt, should be vacuumed at least once per week, we'd recommend the H-Free 500 cordless twin battery or the Upright 300 vacuums to tackle big jobs. Both have great suction power and plenty of tools on board to clean floors, carpet, upholstery and furniture.

Do pets live at the home?

Pets such as cats and dogs can shed skin (dander) and moult all day every day. Pet dander can be hard to see as it can float in the air and settle down on floors and surfaces over time creating dust piles and bunnies. Pet hair, as pet owners will know, gets everywhere and can be annoying to clean up from carpets and fabrics when it starts to embed into the fibres. Dander and hair can be an allergen to many people and can lead to an uncomfortable environment for visitors - more on that later.

Some pets shed more than others but owners should still aim to do the vacuuming 2-3 times a week to make sure the dander and hair do not pile up.

Pet hair can be notoriously difficult to get out of carpets and upholstery, which is why we have selected vacuum cleaner models which come with a motorised pets brush. This turbo brush helps to lift the stubborn hair before the vacuum cleaner suction does the rest.

The cordless H-Free 100, 300 and 500 come with a pets brush model if you need the flexibility of not being tethered to the plug socket. For corded vacuum cleaners for pets we'd recommend the new Upright 300 or the H-Upright 500.

Type of flooring in the home

The type of flooring in the home makes a huge difference to how often the vacuum cleaner needs to come out. Hair, dust and dander can accumulate on hard floors and be moved around, especially in high traffic areas, before settling in corners and hard to reach areas. Under sofas, furniture and in dark corners are common places to find this build up.

Handheld vacuum cleaners can be handy for this kind of small job but if it happens frequently then a weekly clean with an upright or cordless that can tackle them much easier.

For homes which have some carpets you'll find dirt sticks to these surfaces much more frequently, which can sometimes leave marks and odors. Look to vacuum clean these surfaces a couple of times a week to keep on top of it. We have a range of vacuum cleaners which have a beater bar and carpet brush to make the transition from hard floors to carpets seamless. Our H-Upright 500 sensor can detect a change of floor type and change the operation automatically.

If your home is heavily or fully carpeted then a weekly clean may not be enough for busy homes and especially for homes with pets. To keep that type of household clean then 2-3 vacuum sessions a week may be needed or the debris and dirt will start to become visible within the fibres and carpet pile.

People suffering with allergies

The dirt, dust, hair, dander and pollen which can accumulate in the home can wreak havoc with allergy sufferers all year round and it can also make it uncomfortable for guests even if you aren't susceptible. Frequent Hoovering as above will keep allergens at bay, particularly during hay fever season but a big tip here is to make sure your vacuum cleaner has a HEPA filter to trap these particles in so they don't get released back into the air.

The Upright 300 and H-Upright 500 have HEPA filters as standard. An air purifier can also help with cleaning the air in your home and removing allergens.

It is the small particles that you can’t see that often cause the most problems and vacuum cleaners without a HEPA filter can often miss them.
